JI to challenge Karachi mayoral result

The Jamat – e – Islami (JI) president, Sirajul Haq, indicated on Sunday his intention to challenge the results of the local government (LG) elections, with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerging as the largest party in the Karachi mayoral contest.

During a news conference, the JI leader stated the party’s reluctance to recognise the “theft of the public mandate in Karachi,” and announced their intention to contest the LG election results in court.

Siraj also revealed plans for a protest on June 23rd outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office. He reaffirmed JI’s everlasting support for the people of Karachi, vowing not to betray their confidence.

He promised to reclaim the popular mandate that he claimed had been stolen in the Karachi mayoral elections. Haq asked that mayoral elections be held anew after the 30 elected UC chairmen from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were reinstated.

It is worth noting that Murtaza Wahab, the PPP candidate, was chosen as Karachi’s mayor by a show of hands with 173 votes.

According to unconfirmed and unofficial data, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman of the JI received 160 votes. Karachi’s mayor and deputy mayor were elected under strict security at the Pakistan Arts Council.

The results of all UCs in Karachi have been issued by the ECP.

According to the facts, the PPP emerged as the largest party in the City Council, with 104 chairman seats. They also obtained 34 seats designated for women, five for minorities, labour, and youth, and one for disabled and transgender people. There are a total of 155 members.

Furthermore, PTI gained 43 chairman seats, and with 14 reserved seats for women and two reserved seats each for youth, labour, and minorities, their total representation in the City Council is 63.
