Islamabad And Jakarta Set To Renew Sister City Agreement

Islamabad and Jakarta are planning to revive a sister city agreement signed in 1984. This step aims to strengthen the historic friendship between Pakistan and Indonesia.

The federal government has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to fully implement the agreement. The CDA has also been asked to submit proposals for symbolic and cultural exchanges with Jakarta.

According to official sources, the proposals include naming roads after notable leaders from both countries. They also suggest building monuments in each other’s capitals to honor this long-standing relationship.

A senior CDA official said the goal is to highlight the close ties between the two nations through visible and lasting gestures. The city of Islamabad already features many landmarks named after international figures, reflecting its history of diplomatic goodwill.

Examples include Faisal Avenue, Atatürk Avenue, and Zhou Enlai Avenue, named after leaders from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and China. In recent years, Iran Avenue and Erdogan Interchange have also been added to honor friendly countries.

Islamabad is also home to several international parks, such as Argentina Park, Ankara Park, and Japanese Park. The Faisal Mosque, gifted by Saudi Arabia and designed by a Turkish architect, remains a symbol of Islamic unity and cooperation.

Officials confirmed that the CDA is now finalizing detailed plans under the original agreement with Jakarta. These will soon be presented to the federal government for approval.

The restored agreement is expected to promote cultural diplomacy, boost mutual recognition, and create permanent symbols of friendship between the two capitals.

By renewing this partnership, both cities aim to deepen their connection and celebrate shared values.
