Pakistan has completed its first marine bunkering operation at Gwadar Port, marking an important step for the country’s maritime and energy sectors. The successful operation means international commercial vessels can now receive marine fuel at the port, expanding Pakistan’s fuel supply network across all three major seaports.
The first bunkering service at Gwadar Port was provided to the foreign LNG vessel LNG ENUGU. During the operation, the vessel received 2,500 metric tons of Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). The fuel was produced by Cnergyico PK Limited and meets the environmental standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The operation was carried out by global energy company Vitol using its bunker barge Marine Ista. The project was completed in partnership with the National Logistics Corporation (NLC). The successful delivery showed that Pakistan can now provide internationally compliant marine fuel services at another key seaport.
With the launch of services at Gwadar Port, Pakistan now offers marine bunkering at Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar. This creates a complete network for supplying fuel to commercial ships visiting the country’s major ports.
The new service operates under the Pakistan Single Window system and follows electronic customs marine bunkering rules. These digital procedures help improve efficiency and ensure that fuel supply operations meet international standards. They also simplify the process for shipping companies operating in Pakistani waters.
Marine bunkering is an important service for global shipping. It allows vessels to refuel without making unnecessary stops at foreign ports. By offering this service at Gwadar Port, Pakistan hopes to attract more international ships and strengthen its role in regional maritime trade.
Officials believe the project will improve Pakistan’s position as a marine fuel supplier in the region. It could also reduce the need for vessels to depend on major bunkering hubs such as Fujairah and Singapore for fuel. This may help lower costs and save time for shipping companies using Pakistani ports.
The operation is also significant because it is the first time an ocean-going commercial vessel has received bunkering services at Gwadar Port. This milestone highlights the port’s growing importance in Pakistan’s maritime strategy and logistics network.
Gwadar has long been viewed as a strategic gateway for regional trade. The addition of marine fuel services increases the range of facilities available at the port. It also supports Pakistan’s efforts to improve port infrastructure and attract more international shipping activity.
Industry experts say expanding marine services can create new business opportunities in logistics, transportation, and energy. Increased shipping traffic may also support economic growth in the surrounding region over time.
