Fresh clashes erupt as PTI workers dead set on blocking Imran Khan's arrest

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]LAHORE: A new round of protests erupted on Wednesday as another attempt was made to arrest PTI Chairman Imran Khan in order to carry out arrest orders issued by an Islamabad court in the Toshakhana case due to his failure to appear.

A large detachment of police and rangers is approaching on the former premier’s mansion in Zaman Park, while party workers and fans hit them with stones. In response, security personnel are using tear gas shells to separate the crowd, as well as water cannons.

Since yesterday, when a squad of Islamabad police, backed up by Punjab police and rangers, attempted to arrest the stubborn lawmaker, the capital city of Punjab has been tense. So far, the fights have injured several individuals and security officers, including the DIG Operations of the Islamabad police.

The former prime minister was deposed by a no-confidence vote last year and has been embroiled in a number of legal battles, including one with Toshakhana, who is calling for early elections in the country.

Throughout the night, police engaged in fierce skirmishes with PTI supporters near his Zaman Park mansion, shooting teargas and dodging rocks thrown by enraged masses.

DIG Operations of Islamabad police, Shahzad Bokhari, who was dressed in riot gear, told media that the team had arrived to arrest the PTI head. He claimed that police had warrants out for Imran Khan’s arrest after he failed to appear in court. According to reports, the DIG was hurt during a scuffle between police and PTI activists who threw stones. He was later sent to a hospital for treatment. Many more officers were hurt and transported to the Services Hospital for treatment. Several assailants were also apprehended by police.

The Punjab government also dispatched Rangers to Mr Khan’s home. Top Lahore police officers and personnel also arrived at Zaman Park to deal with the mob. In the evening, an aerial surveillance helicopter flew over the area.

Imran Khan released a video shortly before daybreak in which he is seen seated in front of Pakistan and PTI flags at a desk covered with expended teargas canisters.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
