ECB Might Convert The Hundred Competition Into T20 League

Share

Due to concerns from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding its limited popularity and expansion, negotiations have started about turning the Hundred cricket tournament into a T20 event, casting doubt on the tournament’s future.

According to reports, ECB is thinking of making the men’s Hundred competition a T20 competition. Though the discussions are still in their early stages, there is worry that 100-ball cricket is only played in the UK while T20 continues to gain popularity around the world. The ECB is in talks with first-class countries on potential domestic arrangements.

No changes are anticipated until 2025, however it is said that the ECB is open to the notion of broadening the competition to include the national Counties, giving talented cricketers a route into the professional game. Any possible modifications would not affect the women’s Hundred format because it has a proven track record of success.

In anticipation of the Hundred’s continued existence, Sky Sports, the broadcasting partner, extended their contract with the ECB for 220 million pounds a year until 2028. After the successful sale of the IPL franchise, it has been suggested in the past to sell the Hundred to private investors. In spite of this, English authorities believe that the competition shouldn’t be sold because other countries haven’t embraced 100-ball cricket.

The ECB claimed to have made a profit of 11.8 million pounds earlier this month, while a report earlier this month said that the Hundred had lost 9 million pounds in two years.
