A moderate earthquake struck several parts of Pakistan on Monday, causing panic among residents in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and nearby regions as tremors were widely felt during the morning hours.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department Seismic Network, the earthquake occurred on May 4, 2026, at approximately 10:56 AM PST. The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and had a depth of 128 kilometers beneath the surface.
Officials said the epicenter was located near the Tajikistan-Xinjiang border at coordinates 38.65°N and 73.64°E. Due to the earthquake’s depth, tremors were felt across various northern and central parts of Pakistan, including the twin cities and surrounding areas.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed the preliminary parameters shortly after the seismic activity was detected. Residents in several areas rushed out of homes, offices, and commercial buildings as the tremors created fear and uncertainty.
Despite the intensity of the quake, no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or major structural damage have been received so far. Authorities continue monitoring the situation while emergency services remain alert in affected regions.
Earlier, another earthquake measuring 3.9 magnitude also struck areas around Khuzdar. According to seismic officials, that quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located nearly 62 kilometers southeast of Khuzdar, triggering panic among local residents.
Pakistan frequently experiences seismic activity due to its geographical position near active tectonic plate boundaries. Experts advise citizens to remain calm during earthquakes and follow safety measures issued by disaster management authorities.
