The International Olympic Committee (IOC) authorised the addition of five sports to the schedule for the 2028 Los Angeles Games on Monday to reach new international audiences, including cricket and flag football.

The IOC session also authorised the addition of modern pentathlon after the world federation switched horseback riding to an obstacle course after a coach hit a horse that refused to leap a barrier at the Tokyo Olympics.
Weightlifting also secured its spot after changes were made to its anti-doping testing procedures, among other things. Both sports had been provisionally left out of the LA Games.
Boxing’s participation remained in doubt and any decision to include it was put on hold pending developments in governance issues.
