The Punjab Green Credit Programme is offering financial incentives to citizens who take part in environmentally friendly activities. The initiative rewards people for actions such as recycling plastic bottles, planting trees, using bicycles and adopting electric transport.
According to the programme’s official dashboard, more than 1.44 million citizens have registered for the Chief Minister Punjab Green Credit Programme within 14 months. The initiative has also expanded its reach to 41 districts across Punjab.
Registrations have continued to increase, with the programme recording an 18 percent rise over the previous week. Around 476 new users are reportedly joining the programme each day, showing growing public participation in the initiative.
Under the programme, citizens can earn green credits by completing a range of activities that benefit the environment. These include purchasing and using electric bikes or scooters, recycling plastic bottles, reporting smoke-emitting vehicles, cycling, planting trees and taking steps to conserve rainwater.
One of the notable incentives is linked to plastic bottle recycling. Citizens can receive up to Rs2,500 in green credits for collecting one kilogramme of empty plastic bottles. The programme allows a maximum of four kilogrammes to qualify, meaning participants can potentially earn up to Rs10,000 through plastic bottle recycling.
At present, two registered vendors in Lahore are available for the purchase and collection of plastic and empty bottles. The collected material is then sent for recycling as part of the programme’s environmental objectives.
Electric mobility is another area covered by the initiative. Eligible citizens can receive green credits linked to the purchase and use of electric bikes and scooters, subject to the conditions set under the programme.
The scheme also rewards people for identifying smoke-emitting vehicles and reporting industrial units that are operating without zigzag technology. Other activities include rainwater conservation, construction of recharge wells, cycling and planting 10 trees.
The programme currently covers around 38 environment-friendly activities. Through these activities, the government aims to encourage citizens to take practical steps that can help reduce pollution, improve waste management and support environmental conservation.
So far, participants have received around Rs36.5 million in payments through the programme. Approximately Rs16.5 million of this amount was reportedly paid during the last three months, indicating an increase in financial disbursements as participation has grown.
The programme has also attracted a significant number of female participants. Official figures cited in the report show that 124,292 men and 18,149 women have registered with the initiative.
Officials have said that the programme is not focused only on increasing registrations. Its broader objective is to encourage citizens to actively participate in activities that provide environmental benefits.
The mechanism is based on verification. Citizens complete an eligible activity and report it through the programme’s monitoring system. The activity is then monitored and verified before the relevant green credits are issued.
With more than 1.44 million registrations and coverage across 41 districts, the Green Credit Programme is becoming a larger part of Punjab’s environmental initiatives. Citizens interested in earning rewards can participate by completing eligible activities according to the programme’s rules and verification requirements.
