CPPA Proposes Rs7/Unit Increase; Anticipates Another Electric Shock

The relentless inflationary pressures in Pakistan continue to impact its citizens, as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has formally requested an increase in power tariffs from the national power regulator. In their application filed on Tuesday, CPPA is seeking approval for a 7.13 per unit rise in electricity prices, attributing it to the monthly fuel adjustment for January 2024.

If sanctioned, this proposed hike would impose an additional financial burden exceeding Rs67 billion on the public. The hearing to review CPPA’s plea is set for February 23, 2024. This move follows a previous electricity cost increase of Rs4.5 per unit announced by the national power regulator in February 2024. With the potential approval of CPPA’s application, consumers are likely to face heightened financial challenges due to elevated electricity prices.
