Bushra Bibi married Imran during Iddat period, reveals Nikkah registrar

A recent court hearing in Islamabad shed light on the controversy surrounding former Prime Minister Imran Kha’s Nikkah (Islamic marriage) with his current wife, Bushra Bibi.

Mufti Saeed, the cleric who performed the couple’s Nikkah, has now claimed that the initial ceremony was not performed in accordance with Islamic Sharia law because it took place during Bushra Bibi’s iddat period.

The iddat period is a waiting period that a Muslim woman must observe following the death or dissolution of her marriage.

A petition filed by Muhammad Hanif, a Pakistani citizen, revealed Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi’s alleged un-Islamic Nikkah. Senior Civil Judge Nasr Minullah Baloch presided over the hearing.

Mufti Saeed, 62, the principal of a seminary, mentioned having a positive relationship with Imran Khan and being a member of his core committee. He claimed that Imran Khan took him to Lahore’s DHA in 2018 to officiate the couple’s Nikkah.

He claimed that a woman claiming to be Bushra Bibi’s sister assured him that all Sharia requirements for her marriage had been met and that she and Imran Khan could marry.

According to Saeed, he officiated the marriage of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi on January 1, 2018, based on the woman’s assurance. He added that after the wedding, the couple began living together in Islamabad.

However, Imran Khan contacted him again in February 2018 and asked him to conduct the Nikkah again, claiming that Bushra Bibi’s iddat period had not been completed at the time of their first Nikkah because she had divorced in November 2017. As a result, Imran Khan deemed their first Nikkah to be not in accordance with Sharia.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, according to Saeed, were aware of the situation and planned their Nikkah and marriage ceremony accordingly. He also claimed that Imran Khan had told him that marrying Bushra would lead to him becoming Prime Minister.

He also stated that on the fourth day of Ramazan, after Taraweeh prayers, petitioner Muhammad Hanif approached him and inquired about Imran and Bushra’s marriage, to which he revealed the details.

The case has been adjourned until April 19, according to the court.
