In a unique initiative to address travel anxiety among passengers, managers at Istanbul International Airport have introduced therapy dogs as part of the “Therapy Dog Project.” This innovative project, the first of its kind in Turkey, involves specially trained therapy dogs interacting with passengers within the international departures area.

Led by iGA Istanbul Airport, the initiative aims to create a serene and pleasant environment for travelers, recognizing the stress that can be induced by travel. Abdülkadir Demirtaş, the Customer Experience Manager at the airport, emphasized the positive impact of therapy dogs on passengers’ well-being, citing scientific research that shows their presence can lower blood pressure and reduce stress and anxiety levels, contributing to a more enjoyable travel experience.

The Therapy Dog Project currently features five specially trained dogs managed by a team led by Volkan Arslan, the airport’s veterinarian, who oversees the training and care of the dogs. These therapy dogs roam the airport premises, providing support and comfort to passengers, particularly during peak travel times.

In addition to the roaming therapy dogs, the airport management has set up four pet rooms across the facility. These rooms are equipped with amenities such as pet food, litter, and scratching boards, ensuring a comfortable and convenient experience for travelers and their pets. The holistic approach of introducing therapy dogs and pet-friendly facilities aligns with the airport’s commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience and addressing the well-being of passengers.
