China Must ‘Forcefully Counter’ US Arms Sales to Taiwan

China has said it must take forceful countermeasures in response to continued United States arms sales to Taiwan, warning that such actions seriously threaten regional peace and stability. The Chinese foreign ministry stated that Washington’s decisions violate the one-China principle and breach commitments made in past bilateral agreements, adding that Beijing has lodged strong diplomatic protests.

According to Chinese officials, repeated US weapons sales encourage what Beijing calls separatist forces on the island and undermine trust between the world’s two largest economies. The ministry said Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that any foreign military support for the island interferes directly in China’s internal affairs and sovereignty.

Beijing warned that continued arms supplies raise the risk of miscalculation across the Taiwan Strait at a time of already heightened military tensions. Chinese authorities stressed that reunification remains a core national interest and vowed to take all necessary measures to protect territorial integrity, without detailing specific responses.

Analysts say potential Chinese countersteps could include expanded military drills near Taiwan, economic measures, or sanctions against US defense companies involved in the deals. China has previously responded to similar sales with targeted sanctions and increased military patrols, signaling its readiness to escalate pressure if arms transfers continue.

The United States, meanwhile, has defended its actions by citing obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act. US officials argue that arms sales are intended to help Taiwan maintain sufficient self-defense capabilities and deter unilateral changes to the status quo, insisting Washington does not support formal Taiwanese independence.

Taiwan’s government has also defended the purchases, saying they are necessary for self-defense amid growing pressure from the mainland. Officials in Taipei maintain that only Taiwan’s people can determine their future, while observers warn that rising US-China tensions over the issue remain one of the most dangerous flashpoints in Asia.
