The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has seized several buses belonging to Punjab University for emitting excessive smoke during inspections in Lahore. The action is part of a wider crackdown on vehicles contributing to air pollution.
EPA teams stopped multiple buses on Canal Road and found them releasing thick emissions, significantly worsening the city’s air quality. Officials noted that the buses did not have the mandatory environmental fitness certificates required for operation.
Following the inspection, the EPA confiscated the buses on the spot and initiated legal proceedings under the Environmental Protection Act. Authorities confirmed that similar actions are being taken against smoke-emitting vehicles operated by other universities, schools, colleges, and hospitals across Punjab.
Officials highlighted that poorly maintained and aging vehicles are major contributors to pollution. With Lahore and other cities in Punjab experiencing severe smog, the provincial government has intensified its environmental enforcement.
EPA monitoring teams have been deployed across the province to prevent unfit vehicles from operating on public roads. Authorities emphasized that vehicles without proper certification or failing environmental standards will not be allowed to run, sending a strong message to all institutions.
The crackdown on Punjab University buses underscores the government’s commitment to improving air quality and protecting public health. Environmental authorities also called on other educational institutions to ensure their vehicles comply with regulations to reduce emissions.
Punjab University officials have not yet commented on the seizure, but the EPA confirmed that compliance with environmental rules is mandatory for all university-operated vehicles. Authorities said continued violations could result in further legal action.
