Ruby Rose Labels Sydney Sweeney A ‘Psychopath’

Australian actor Ruby Rose has publicly criticized actress Sydney Sweeney, blaming her for the poor box office performance of the boxing biopic Christy.

The film, starring Sweeney as boxing legend Christy Martin, earned only $1.3 million domestically during its opening weekend, falling below industry expectations. Fans and critics noted the film struggled to attract large audiences despite its high-profile lead.

Rose revealed that she was originally attached to play Christy and praised the original script as “incredible” and transformative. She said the initial team had a strong personal connection to the material, stating, “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry [Christy Martin].”

Her criticism focused on Sydney Sweeney’s handling of the film’s public relations and her defense of the project. Rose accused the actress of misrepresenting audience expectations, claiming, “None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Rose later clarified that she regretted using ableist language and said she should have simply called Sweeney a “psychopath.”

The dispute appears to respond to Sydney Sweeney’s recent Instagram statement defending the film. Sweeney emphasized that the movie’s impact mattered more than its box office numbers, saying, “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded… we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
