At least 14 newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the gynaecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.
The fire erupted at around 7am on the third floor of the hospital’s Mother and Child Health Centre. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to control the blaze.
According to rescue sources, the fire reportedly started after an air-conditioning compressor exploded inside the nursery. However, the exact cause remains subject to investigation.
PIMS officials said 15 babies were present in the ward when the incident occurred. At least one newborn was rescued by a doctor, according to hospital officials.
The fire was brought under control after emergency teams reached the affected section. Rescue officials then began cooling operations to ensure the area was safe.
Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances participated in the emergency response, according to the Islamabad administration.
