Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal has once again criticized his former coach, Waqar Younis, claiming he played a major role in ending his international career. Speaking on a local television talk show, Umar reflected on the highs and lows of his career. He said internal politics and personal grudges prevented him from continuing in Pakistan cricket.
Umar Akmal claimed that some officials in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continue to block his return to domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “Some people in the PCB don’t want me or Kamran [Akmal] to play again. That’s why we are not picked in the PSL,” he said. Despite being fit and available, Umar added that he was deliberately excluded, making it hard for franchises to evaluate his form.
Turning to Waqar Younis, Umar Akmal alleged that the former fast bowler had personal issues with him during his coaching tenure. “Waqar Younis ruined my career, not because of my performance, but because of jealousy. He couldn’t tolerate my fame, earnings, or lifestyle,” Umar claimed. He further stated that Waqar had conflicts with other senior players, though he did not name them. Umar also said he has evidence to support his claims and will reveal it when the time is right.
This is not the first time Umar Akmal has publicly criticized Waqar Younis. Their differences have caused tension during Waqar’s two coaching tenures, which together lasted nearly three years. Fans remain divided over Umar Akmal’s career, with some seeing him as a wasted talent and others believing he was unfairly sidelined.
