Smuggling Bid Foiled as 2.19kg Marijuana Found at Karachi Airport

The Customs Collectorate at Karachi Airport successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 2.19 kilograms of marijuana that was cleverly concealed in Thai Tea cans, officials confirmed on Thursday.

According to a press release issued by the Customs Department, the marijuana was detected during a routine baggage screening operation at Jinnah International Airport. The contraband was packed inside multiple tea cans, apparently intended to pass through airport scanners unnoticed.

Officials revealed that the narcotics were being transported on an international flight, but the vigilant customs team intercepted the package before it could be cleared. The department immediately seized the drugs and initiated a detailed investigation to identify the individuals involved in the smuggling attempt.

Authorities suspect that an international drug network might be behind the smuggling bid, using innovative methods such as packaging drugs in everyday items like beverages, tea cans, and food containers to evade detection.

The customs department praised its staff for their swift action and strict enforcement of anti-smuggling laws. Their timely intervention prevented the illegal narcotics from being trafficked abroad, reflecting Pakistan’s growing efforts to tighten border and airport security.

In recent months, law enforcement agencies in Karachi have intensified operations to combat rising cases of smuggling and drug trafficking. The government has also introduced advanced screening technologies and intelligence-led monitoring to enhance airport security.

Earlier this week, authorities revealed that Karachi’s new e-challan system issued thousands of fines within just three days, highlighting the city’s broader push toward digital enforcement and law compliance. This ongoing modernization from traffic regulation to customs monitoring demonstrates how technology is helping authorities improve efficiency and accountability across sectors.

Meanwhile, the Customs Department has assured that all individuals linked to the smuggling network will face strict legal action. Officials emphasized that drug-related crimes not only tarnish Pakistan’s international image but also endanger public safety and social stability.

With multiple agencies now coordinating to curb smuggling operations, airport security measures have been further strengthened. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining vigilance and ensuring that Pakistan’s airports remain safe from illegal trade activities.
