Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly condemned former CIA officer John Kiriakou for his controversial remarks about ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan, demanding a public apology and warning of legal action in the United States if he fails to do so.
The reaction followed Kiriakou’s recent interview, in which he alleged that Imran Khan sought approval from the U.S. ambassador in Islamabad before exposing the 2022 “cipher scandal.” He also claimed that Khan attempted to contact the Pakistani establishment through his ex-wife, Jemima Khan.
PTI’s Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram dismissed the allegations as “false, baseless, and fabricated,” noting that Kiriakou provided no evidence to support his claims. He pointed to Kiriakou’s history of contradictory statements, including his past assertions about U.S. control over Pakistan’s nuclear assets.
Waqas reiterated that the cipher was officially shared by Pakistan’s then-ambassador Asad Majeed and presented by Khan before the National Security Committee and Parliament. PTI maintains that Kiriakou’s claims are an attempt to distort facts and vowed to pursue legal action in U.S. courts if no apology is issued.
