France Unveils Fresh Government amid Political Tension

President Emmanuel Macron announced a new French government on Sunday after lengthy negotiations aimed at preventing further political instability.

The new cabinet, combining seasoned figures with newcomers, represents Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s second effort to break months of parliamentary gridlock and pass a delayed austerity budget. Lecornu said on X that the team’s mission is to “deliver France a budget before year’s end.”

Under French law, the 2026 draft budget must be submitted by Tuesday, giving parliament 70 days to debate it. However, the challenge is immense — Lecornu’s two predecessors were ousted over spending cuts, and many lawmakers still oppose his reappointment.

According to the Elysée Palace, Jean-Noël Barrot remains foreign minister, Catherine Vautrin takes over defense, and Roland Lescure becomes economy minister. Other key figures, including Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin and Culture Minister Rachida Dati, retain their positions.

Macron’s administration, weakened since losing its majority in last year’s snap elections, now faces renewed opposition. With tensions high and alliances fragile, Lecornu’s government must prove it can govern — and deliver the crucial budget that may decide its survival.
