India has agreed in principle to participate in the 2027 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Pakistan, marking a potential return to the regional sporting event after a gap of 23 years.
According to reports, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood said India was represented at a high-level meeting of the South Asian Olympic Association, where it agreed to participate after receiving an invitation from Pakistan.
India is expected to provide details of its contingent in January 2027, according to the report.
India Set to Return After 23 Years
India’s participation would be a significant development for the regional Games, particularly given the sporting and political tensions that have affected athletic exchanges between the two countries.
The participation agreement is currently described as being in principle, meaning further formal details regarding India’s contingent and participation arrangements are expected to be finalized later.
The Indian side is expected to communicate information about the size and composition of its contingent in January next year.
Pakistan to Host SAF Games in April 2027
Pakistan is scheduled to host the 14th SAF Games from April 4 to 11, 2027.
The dates were finalized in coordination with the South Asian Olympic Committee during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The Games are planned across three major cities: Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.
The event will feature competitions in 28 sports, bringing athletes from across South Asia together for the regional sporting competition.
Earlier preparations had indicated around 346 medal events, with approximately 3,200 athletes expected. More recent government planning estimates, however, put the expected number of athletes and officials at more than 6,000.
Preparations Underway Across Pakistan
The Pakistan Olympic Association has already begun preparations for hosting the regional Games in coordination with Olympic bodies from different parts of the country.
Authorities are working on arrangements involving sporting venues, accommodation, transportation and security ahead of the event.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has directed federal and provincial authorities to ensure that venues are completed within the required timeframe.
Officials have also been instructed to make comprehensive arrangements for athletes, officials and visiting delegations.
The preparations are expected to intensify as the country moves closer to the April 2027 opening of the Games.
India Took Part in Regional Meeting
India had also participated virtually in the South Asia Olympic Council’s August meeting, alongside representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The participation in the regional meeting was followed by India’s reported agreement in principle to take part in the Games hosted by Pakistan.
If finalized, India’s presence would add significant sporting interest to the 2027 event and strengthen participation from one of South Asia’s largest sporting nations.
Pakistan Returns as Host
Pakistan last hosted the regional Games in Islamabad in 2004.
The 2027 edition will therefore mark Pakistan’s return as host after more than two decades.
Hosting the Games is expected to provide Pakistan with an opportunity to showcase its sporting infrastructure and strengthen regional sporting ties.
The event will also require extensive coordination between federal authorities, provincial governments, the Pakistan Olympic Association and other relevant organizations.
Final Participation Details Expected in 2027
While India’s agreement in principle is an important development, final details regarding its participation have yet to be provided.
The expected announcement of India’s contingent in January 2027 should offer greater clarity about the country’s representation at the Games.
Meanwhile, Pakistan will continue preparations for the event, including venue development and arrangements for security, accommodation and transportation.
With the Games scheduled for April 4 to 11, 2027, preparations are expected to remain a major focus for authorities in the coming months.
India’s potential participation after 23 years could also make the 14th SAF Games one of the most closely watched editions of the regional sporting event.
