The Sindh government has directed the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) to stop work on provincial development projects. The move comes amid concerns over the company exceeding its mandate.
A formal letter was issued following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on September 26. Officials reviewed PIDCL’s activities in the province and concluded that its role in urban package projects is unlawful.
According to the letter, PIDCL should focus solely on completing former Pak-WAPDA schemes. Karachi and Hyderabad urban development packages do not fall under the company’s jurisdiction, the authorities emphasized. The provincial government warned PIDCL against overstepping the framework agreed upon between the federal and Sindh governments.
The decision is part of Sindh’s efforts to maintain control over local development projects and ensure transparency and accountability. Officials stated that all provincial initiatives must comply with legal and administrative protocols.
This step highlights ongoing tensions between the federal and provincial governments regarding urban and infrastructure projects. Sindh authorities have stressed the importance of provincial oversight to prevent unauthorized federal involvement.
Experts said the move could impact ongoing projects in major cities but is intended to protect provincial interests. The government of Sindh remains committed to completing urban development schemes while ensuring that all operations follow established rules.
Authorities have asked PIDCL to halt any work immediately and coordinate with the provincial planning departments for proper execution of projects. The provincial government also plans to review the status of all ongoing schemes to ensure compliance with local regulations.
By taking control, Sindh aims to safeguard its development agenda, improve infrastructure management, and ensure that citizens benefit from well-planned and legally authorized projects.
