Sindh to Distribute Free Solar Home Systems to 275,000 Families

The Sindh government has announced a major initiative to provide free solar home systems to 275,000 low-income families across the province. The project is valued at Rs. 18.206 billion and aims to improve access to affordable and clean energy for households with limited financial resources.

The announcement was made during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Friday. During the meeting, he directed the Energy Department to speed up the distribution and installation of the solar systems so that eligible families can benefit as soon as possible.

According to officials, the project is designed to improve the quality of life for underprivileged households while promoting the use of renewable energy. The government believes the initiative will help reduce electricity costs and improve energy access in areas with limited power supply.

Under the program, Sindh will distribute solar home systems to two categories of beneficiaries. The first group includes 132,000 off-grid households living in remote, desert, mountainous, riverine, and other underserved areas where access to electricity remains limited.

The second group includes 143,000 protected electricity consumers connected to the national grid. These households consume up to 100 electricity units per month and meet the eligibility requirements set by the government.

Each selected family will receive a complete solar home system free of charge. The package includes a 180-watt solar panel, a lithium battery, one electric fan, and LED lights. These systems are expected to provide basic electricity for daily household needs.

Officials said the project is already making progress in different parts of the province. So far, 11,571 solar home systems have been installed in several districts.

The completed installations cover Karachi, Ghotki, Umerkot, Dadu, Tharparkar, Thatta, and Shaheed Benazirabad. More installations are expected as the project expands across the province.

The government launched the initiative in April 2025. According to the implementation plan, the project is expected to be completed by June 2027.

Families registered under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) will receive priority during the distribution process. Officials said this approach will ensure that the most deserving households benefit first.

The Sindh government has also emphasized transparency throughout the project. Authorities said proper monitoring systems will be used to ensure fair distribution and timely installation of the solar equipment.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah instructed officials to maintain the pace of implementation and avoid unnecessary delays. He stressed that the project should reach deserving families according to the approved schedule.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce dependence on traditional electricity sources. Solar energy is expected to provide a reliable solution for many households, especially those living in areas where electricity supply is limited or unavailable.

Officials believe the project will also contribute to environmental sustainability by encouraging the use of clean energy. At the same time, it is expected to reduce the financial burden on low-income families struggling with rising electricity costs.
