Govt Introduces Significant Tax Exemptions For Gilgit-Baltistan

In a major move to support Gilgit-Baltistan, the Govt has announced broad tax exemptions on goods imported for local consumption. The exemptions cover federal levies including sales tax, income tax, and excise duty.

Federal Minister for Power, Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, made the announcement on Wednesday. He thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for appointing him chairman of a special committee formed on August 17, 2025, to address trade and community concerns in the region.

The committee finalized practical and consensus-based recommendations in just one and a half months, which were approved by the Prime Minister. Leghari praised the cooperation of the FBR, federal officials, and political leadership of Gilgit-Baltistan in shaping these measures.

The minister explained that the tax exemptions aim to remove barriers in imports, exports, and transit trade. They are expected to create a business-friendly environment and support economic growth in Gilgit-Baltistan. He called it a significant step reflecting Pakistan’s vision of inclusive development.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan welcomed the announcement. He stressed that the agreement should be implemented fully to ensure maximum benefits for businesses and residents. He described the move as a key step toward the economic empowerment of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Ashfaq Ahmed, President of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chamber of Commerce, urged traders to resume cross-border trade at the Sost border from Thursday. He said the tax exemptions would revive commerce and strengthen regional trade ties.

Senator Saleem Mandviwala, a committee member, highlighted the government’s concern over the suspension of trade between Pakistan and China. He confirmed that the committee developed a mechanism for the swift resumption of trade in the region.

The Govt’s tax exemptions are expected to stimulate economic activity, promote regional development, and integrate Gilgit-Baltistan further into Pakistan’s national economy.
