The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has predicted the next spell of monsoon rains starting August 13 and issued a flood advisory.
A PDMA spokesperson said alerts have been issued for the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers, along with nearby streams and nullahs, warning of possible flooding. Water levels in major rivers could rise during this seventh phase of monsoon rains.
All commissioners, deputy commissioners, and concerned departments across Punjab have been instructed to remain vigilant. Departments on high alert include local government, agriculture, irrigation, health, forests, livestock, and transport.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia directed officials to complete preparations in advance per the Punjab Chief Minister’s instructions. He stressed that emergency control room staff must be on duty round-the-clock and Rescue 1122 disaster response teams remain ready.
Authorities are tasked with keeping the public informed, ensuring the evacuation of residents and livestock from riverbeds, and promoting compliance with safety guidelines.
The DG urged citizens to avoid swimming in rivers, canals, streams, and ponds, and to cooperate with officials in case of emergency evacuations. In emergencies, the public has been advised to call PDMA’s helpline 1129.
