The Punjab government is facing difficulties in keeping sugar prices under control, even though supply to markets has improved.

Officials say the official retail price of sugar is fixed at Rs173 per kilogram. This price is being followed in major wholesale markets. However, in residential areas and small local shops, sugar is still being sold at much higher rates — between Rs190 and Rs200 per kilogram.

Since July 25, more than 1,900 tonnes of sugar have been sent to markets in Lahore. Another 1,700 tonnes is expected to arrive soon, according to the district administration. Despite this additional supply, prices remain high in several areas.

To deal with the situation, the Punjab government has launched a large-scale crackdown against those selling sugar at inflated prices. Over 30,000 enforcement actions have been carried out across the province. These efforts aim to ensure that shopkeepers and distributors follow the official price list.

As part of the crackdown, 2,092 people have been arrested so far. Authorities have also registered 361 FIRs against violators for profiteering and ignoring price control measures.

The administration says it will continue the campaign until prices come down to the official level. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty of overcharging.

Many citizens are expressing concern over rising food costs. For low-income families, the high price of sugar is putting extra pressure on their household budgets. Officials believe that consistent enforcement and increased supply will help bring relief in the coming weeks.

The government is urging retailers to follow the law and sell sugar at approved rates to avoid penalties.
