Indian cricketer Chahal has shared his experience dealing with mental health challenges following his divorce. In a recent podcast interview, he revealed facing anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts during the final phase of his marriage.
Chahal was married to choreographer Dhanashree Verma for nearly five years before they separated in March 2024. He said their divorce happened due to fundamental differences in their lifestyles and priorities. Chahal explained that balancing his cricket career and personal life was difficult, especially as both were focused on their own goals.
During the Vijay Hazare Trophy season in late 2023 and early 2024, Chahal took time off to focus on his mental health. He described experiencing anxiety attacks, where his body would shake and sweat uncontrollably. He also admitted to struggling with expressing emotions during his relationship, but said he is now working on this personal flaw.
Chahal addressed the public reaction to his divorce, saying social media accusations hurt him deeply. Many people called him a cheater, but he denied these claims, stating he has always been loyal. He emphasized that he respected his partner and never engaged in any abusive behavior.
The cricketer also explained a misunderstanding caused by a T-shirt he wore during a court appearance. Some interpreted it as mocking his ex-wife, but Chahal said it symbolized relief after ending a painful chapter in his life.
Following the divorce, a music video by Dhanashree led to more rumors, which Chahal strongly denied. He reiterated that he has never been unfaithful.
Chahal shared that after the separation, he spent many days crying and sleeping very little. He confided in a friend about his suicidal thoughts and said he needed a break from cricket to recover.
By speaking openly about his struggles, Chahal hopes to raise awareness about mental health and encourage others to seek help during tough times.
