The federal government has rolled out a new consumer-focused initiative titled Apna Meter, Apni Reading with the launch of the Power Smart App, aimed at addressing long-standing issues in the electricity billing process. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially inaugurated the app, describing it as a key governance reform designed to place power in the hands of consumers.
The app allows users to submit their electricity meter readings by uploading a photo on a designated date each month. Once submitted, the bill will be generated solely on the basis of the consumer’s reading—overriding any subsequent reading by meter readers.

According to the Power Division, the system is expected to minimize common billing issues such as overcharging, human error, and unwarranted interference. Officials say the new process will not only streamline operations but also significantly reduce consumer complaints.
The initiative is especially important for those receiving government electricity subsidies. Currently, consumers using up to 200 units receive a heavily subsidized bill—around Rs. 2,330—but even slight overuse can eliminate the subsidy, hiking the bill to over Rs. 8,000. The Power Smart App helps consumers avoid such penalties by allowing timely and accurate submissions.
By making billing more transparent and citizen-driven, the app is being seen as a progressive step in ensuring accountability and consumer protection in the energy sector.
