The Punjab School Education Department has announced plans to transition all higher and secondary schools in the province to solar energy
Authorities have requested updated records on schools already converted to solar power. Out of 861 functioning higher and secondary schools in Punjab—including 21 in Lahore—only four in the provincial capital have adopted solar energy so far.

A formal notification has instructed school heads to submit comprehensive data on schools slated for solar conversion by June 30, 2025. Officials warned that failure to provide the required information may lead to disciplinary action.
Sources revealed that some schools have independently installed solar systems without government aid. Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali stated that the solar shift began five years ago but has been hindered by limited funding. In some cases, teachers reportedly contributed Rs 15,000 each to fund solar panel installations.
Ali called on the government to ensure all schools receive solar systems free of charge, stressing the importance of fair access to renewable energy infrastructure.
