The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued urgent alerts for potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), flash floods, landslides, and heavy monsoon rains across northern and southern Pakistan over the next 24 hours. The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) warned that rising temperatures, strong monsoon currents, and a westerly wave could trigger extreme weather conditions.

High-Risk Zones Identified

Persistent heat has accelerated glacier and snowmelt in northern regions, increasing pressure on glacial lakes. The NEOC highlighted several vulnerable valleys, including Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thalu 1 and 2, Badswat, Hinarchi, Darkut, and Hundur, as high-risk areas. A sudden GLOF event could cause flash floods, endangering lives, livestock, agriculture, and critical infrastructure like roads and bridges.

Authorities have advised residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid glaciers, lakes, and riverbanks in these zones. The NDMA urged people to stay updated via official channels, follow evacuation orders if issued, and report unusual glacial activity immediately. The public can also download the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” app for real-time warnings.

Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide

The NDMA also issued weather alerts for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Islamabad, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the next 12-24 hours.

  • AJK: Bagh, Rawalakot, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, and Mirpur may experience moderate to heavy rain.
  • Sindh: Sukkur, Larkana, Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, and Badin are on alert.
  • KP: Chitral, Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, and Waziristan could face severe weather.
  • Punjab & Islamabad: Heavy rains are expected in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Multan, and the capital.

Potential Hazards

The NDMA warned of uprooted trees, damaged power lines, and collapsed structures due to strong winds. Dust storms may reduce visibility, increasing traffic accident risks. Citizens should avoid unstable structures, billboards, and standing near trees.

Emergency Measures Activated

  • Galiyat Region: Landslides and rockfalls have disrupted traffic; tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
  • AJK Flood Control: Emergency warning centers are being set up in all districts, staffed by Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and Red Crescent teams for 24/7 monitoring.
  • Helpline: A 24/7 emergency number (1915) has been activated for assistance.

Authorities have directed emergency services to remain on high alert as the country braces for severe weather impacts. Citizens are urged to stay vigilant and follow official safety guidelines.
