The Punjab Home Department has announced the enforcement of Section 144 across the province from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram, aiming to ensure peace and security during the holy month. The decision, revealed in an official notification on Saturday, includes a wide range of restrictions designed to prevent sectarian violence and maintain public order.
Authorities have banned all new religious processions and gatherings during this period. A blanket prohibition on the public display of weapons — licensed or not — has also been put in place. The government stressed that any speech, slogan, or action deemed provocative or capable of inciting sectarian or religious unrest will be met with legal consequences.

Statements promoting sectarian hatred — whether shared through social media, printed material, or loudspeakers — are also strictly banned. Additionally, pillion riding will be prohibited on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, though exemptions have been granted to women, senior citizens, and security personnel.
Further security measures include a ban on temporary structures such as marquees on rooftops along procession routes. Stockpiling of items like stones or bottles in procession areas is also forbidden. Public gatherings on rooftops or outside shops during processions will not be allowed to avoid any potential risks.
Citizens are urged to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies throughout the enforcement period. Violators of Section 144 will face strict legal action under the provincial security guidelines.
