Lahore High Court Orders Water Recycling Plants at Service Stations Across Punjab
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the installation of water recycling plants at all service stations in Punjab in a bid to combat environmental pollution and tackle smog-related issues. The order was issued by Justice Shahid Karim during the hearing of multiple petitions concerning air quality and public health.
Justice Karim instructed all deputy commissioners across the province to ensure the immediate implementation of the directive.
Concerns Over Water Contamination in Kasur
The court was presented with a report on the closure of a water treatment plant in Kasur, which Justice Karim condemned as a major health hazard. He noted the rise in disease outbreaks due to contaminated water and ordered the urgent restoration of the plant to provide safe drinking water to residents.
Appreciation for CBD Rainwater Initiative
The court also commended the Central Business District (CBD) for constructing a rainwater storage tank, which will now be used for cleaning roads and watering plants, showcasing sustainable urban water management.
EPA Crackdown on Crop Residue Burning
The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) briefed the court on its operations to curb crop residue burning along the motorway—one of the major contributors to smog. Fines are being imposed on violators as part of enforcement measures.
The LHC has requested further updates from all relevant departments and adjourned the hearing until next Friday.
