Electricity Bills Likely to Rise as CPPA Seeks Rs. 1.25/Unit Hike for April Fuel Charges
ISLAMABAD – Pakistani consumers may face higher electricity bills as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a Rs. 1.25 per unit increase in power tariffs under the monthly fuel price adjustment (FPA) for April 2025.

In a formal application submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the CPPA stated that 10.513 billion units of electricity were generated during April, with 10.196 billion units delivered to distribution companies. The reference fuel cost was Rs. 7.68 per unit, but the actual cost soared to Rs. 8.94 per unit, resulting in a shortfall the CPPA now seeks to recover from end-users.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing for May 29, during which the proposed tariff hike will be reviewed and either approved or rejected.
Power Generation Mix – April 2025:
- Hydropower: 21.94%
- Local coal: 14.51%
- Imported coal: 10.02%
- Furnace oil: 0.97%
- Local gas: 8.01%
- RLNG (Imported LNG): 20.52%
- Nuclear energy: 17.91%
The increase in power generation costs is largely driven by a greater reliance on imported fuel sources, especially LNG, contributing to the overall rise in tariffs.
