Pakistan Destroys India’s S-400 Air Defence System in Operation Bunyan Marsus
As part of its ongoing Operation Bunyan Marsus against India, Pakistan has successfully targeted and destroyed India’s S-400 air defence system stationed in Adampur, located in the Jalandhar district of Indian Punjab.
Reports from security sources indicate that Pakistan’s Air Force (PAF) employed hypersonic missile technology in its retaliatory strikes. A JF-17 Thunder aircraft was credited with delivering the decisive blow to the advanced S-400 system, a key part of India’s air defence capabilities.

What is the S-400 Air Defence System?
- India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in October 2018 to acquire five squadrons of the S-400 Triumf system.
- The S-400 is a mobile, long-range surface-to-air missile system capable of targeting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at ranges up to 400 km, with threat detection up to 600 km.
- It consists of missile launchers, phased-array radar, and a command center, with the ability to track over 100 targets simultaneously.
- India has deployed three of the five squadrons, with the first in Pathankot (Punjab) in 2021, followed by units in Sikkim (2022) and Rajasthan-Gujarat (2023).
- The system is one of the most advanced and potent globally, and is viewed by NATO as a major threat due to its multi-target engagement and long-range capabilities.
- Despite concerns over US sanctions under CAATSA for acquiring the system, India proceeded with the purchase to enhance its defence against Pakistan and China.
Pakistan’s Retaliatory Strikes:
In retaliation for India’s recent missile strikes, Pakistan launched its counterattack under Operation Bunyan-um-Marsus, targeting multiple strategic Indian military sites. The attacks included the firing of ‘Fatah 2’ missiles, which have been instrumental in causing significant damage.
- Key targets include Indian airfields in Udhampur, Adampur, Suratgarh, and Pathankot, as well as missile storage facilities like the BrahMos site in Beas.
- A senior Indian administrative officer was reportedly killed in Rajouri, and Indian artillery positions in Dehrangyari were destroyed, along with BrahMos storage in Nagrota (India-held Kashmir).
- According to Indian media, 26 locations across India have been targeted, with Pakistani drones reportedly reaching New Delhi, and one drone reportedly hitting Ferozepur.
The ongoing military operations continue to intensify, with both nations exchanging heavy strikes, further escalating the regional conflict.
