The United States has urged both Pakistan and India to work towards a “responsible resolution,” after New Delhi accused Pakistan of involvement in the Pahalgam attack and hinted at ending the water treaty.

The US State Department said Washington is closely following developments and remains in contact with both capitals, encouraging dialogue to manage rising tensions. Officials reiterated their condemnation of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, located in Indian-occupied Kashmir, which claimed over two dozen lives and deepened hostilities between the two nations.

While the Trump administration condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with India, it avoided directly blaming Pakistan, reflecting Washington’s careful balancing act. With India becoming a key ally against China’s growing influence, and Pakistan’s importance declining post-Afghanistan withdrawal, the US is unlikely to intervene heavily. Analysts noted that if India retaliates, Washington may sympathize with India’s counterterrorism stance, maintaining a largely hands-off approach as it focuses on crises in Ukraine and Gaza. The situation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors remains volatile, closely watched by global powers.
