Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Announces Partnership with Huawei for Smart City Transformation in Lahore
During her visit to China, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz unveiled a landmark partnership with Huawei Technologies aimed at transforming Lahore into Pakistan’s first modern smart city. This initiative will harness cutting-edge digital solutions to improve urban living and infrastructure in the city.
The Chief Minister was warmly welcomed at Huawei’s Longgang District headquarters in Shanghai, where she invited Huawei to increase its investment in Pakistan, particularly in Punjab. As part of the partnership, she proposed the establishment of a Huawei office at Nawaz Sharif IT City and assured full cooperation for setting up assembly and manufacturing plants in the province. She also offered Huawei the opportunity to open retail offices and after-sales service centers throughout Punjab.
Digital Transformation and AI University Focus
In her meeting with Wang Chengdong, Huawei’s President of Government Affairs, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the modernization of Lahore into a digital city. Key areas of focus for this transformation include e-commerce, ecosystem production, and the digitalization of health and education sectors. She also discussed the role of Huawei in establishing Punjab’s first Artificial Intelligence University and the need for the company’s expertise in capacity building and IT research at Nawaz Sharif IT City.
The discussions also touched on the potential for Huawei to help familiarize Punjab’s youth with modern digital technologies, thereby supporting the development of a robust tech ecosystem in the province. Notably, Huawei had already played a significant role in establishing Lahore’s first Safe City project, showcasing their long-term contributions to Punjab’s technological advancements.

Huawei’s Commitment to Punjab
Wang Chengdong provided a comprehensive briefing on Huawei’s ongoing projects in Pakistan, especially in Punjab, and expressed strong interest in furthering the partnership. He highlighted Huawei’s capabilities in telecommunications, electronics, and digitalization, all of which align with Punjab’s vision for a “Digital Punjab.”
CM Maryam Nawaz concluded the visit by touring Huawei’s departments and manufacturing facilities, reaffirming the province’s commitment to leveraging Huawei’s expertise for technological progress and fostering economic growth through digital innovation.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step toward revolutionizing urban living standards in Lahore, setting a benchmark for smart city development in Pakistan.
