Renowned Indian music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their decision to part ways after almost three decades of marriage. The news was confirmed through an official statement issued by Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, who revealed that the separation followed significant emotional strain in their relationship.

The statement read: “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”
Saira, who expressed deep pain over the decision, emphasized her need for privacy and understanding as she navigates this difficult phase in her life.
The couple married in 1995 in an arranged ceremony facilitated by Rahman’s mother, as the composer, then a rising star, had little time to find a bride due to his intense work schedule. Rahman had shared in the past that he had asked his mother to find a “simple” woman who would support his music career and inspire him. Together, Rahman and Saira have three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
