Axar Patel sustained a left quadriceps strain during the Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh, and his recovery didn’t progress in time for the World Cup. Consequently, the spin-bowling all-rounder was absent from the Asia Cup final game.
In his place, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been drafted into the team. Ashwin made a remarkable return to ODI cricket during the recent series against Australia, claiming four wickets in two matches.

Axar’s inclusion in the squad for the final ODI was conditional on his fitness, but he was unable to participate as India suffered a 66-run defeat in Rajkot.
R Ashwin replaces injured Axar Patel in the 15-member squad.
