The timeline of Imran Riaz Khan’s case is as follows:
- Riaz was taken into police custody after the violent May 9 protests that erupted following Imran Khan’s arrest.
- On May 15, the LHC was informed about his release following a written undertaking.
- After his disappearance, an FIR was filed on May 16 by his father, Muhammad Riaz, accusing unidentified individuals of kidnapping Riaz under Section 365 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
- His father also filed a plea in the LHC for his recovery.
- On May 19, his father pleaded for mercy in a court hearing as the crackdown on protesters intensified, leading to the chief justice’s order for Riaz’s recovery by May 22.
- The LHC instructed the ministries of interior and defence to aid in Riaz’s recovery after Punjab IG Anwar reported no trace of the journalist in any police department nationwide.
- On May 26, the court directed all agencies to collaborate and locate Riaz, noting phone numbers linked to Afghanistan.
- In a June 6 hearing, Riaz’s lawyer expressed impatience while the Punjab administration claimed ongoing efforts to locate the journalist.
- On July 5, the LHC set a deadline of July 25 for police to trace Riaz.
- On September 6, Punjab IG Usman Anwar promised “good news” in the coming days.
- However, as of September 13, there was no significant update, but the IG stated that the investigation was progressing positively.
- Finally, on September 20, the court provided the Punjab IG with a “last opportunity” to recover Riaz by September 26, adjourning the proceedings until that date in the petition for his recovery.
