The Sindh government has started work on a major digital infrastructure initiative. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed officials to prepare a complete plan for setting up three modern provincial data centres under the Digital Sindh project.
The decision was made during a meeting with National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) Managing Director Major General (Retired) Ali Farhan. Senior officials from the provincial government and NTC also took part in the discussion.
The meeting focused on expanding cooperation between the Sindh government and NTC. Officials reviewed progress in telecommunications, data management, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and digital governance. They also discussed ways to improve technology-based public services across the province.
During the briefing, the chief minister was informed about NTC’s ICT infrastructure across Pakistan. Officials said the organization already operates data centres in Islamabad, Lahore, and Quetta. They also shared that NTC has around 1,000 kilometres of optical fibre network in Sindh.
Officials revealed that a new modern data centre is planned for Karachi. The facility is expected to support the province’s growing e-governance needs. It will also strengthen data sovereignty by ensuring secure handling and storage of government information.
According to officials, the planned data centre will provide secure data storage, cloud services, disaster recovery systems, and business continuity support. These services will help government departments manage digital operations more efficiently. They will also improve the safety and availability of important public records.
Murad Ali Shah said the province is entering a new stage of digital governance. He noted that technology will play a bigger role in improving public administration and service delivery. He also stressed that secure digital infrastructure has become a strategic requirement for the government.
The chief minister described official data as a national asset that must be protected. He instructed the Planning and Development Board, the Information Technology Department, and NTC to prepare a detailed roadmap for the project.
The roadmap will include technical requirements, project timelines, administrative arrangements, and future expansion plans. It will also identify the resources needed to complete the project successfully.
Murad Ali Shah further directed that the proposed data centres should meet international standards for cybersecurity, data protection, and disaster recovery. He also suggested developing the project through a public-private partnership model to ensure long-term sustainability and investment.
