The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Lahore-born economist Saadia Zahidi as its next director general, making history as the first woman to lead the global airline industry’s most influential organization.
According to an official statement issued by IATA, Zahidi will formally assume the role on November 1, 2026, becoming the association’s ninth director general. She will succeed Willie Walsh, who is scheduled to step down on July 31 after leading the organization through one of the aviation sector’s most challenging periods.
Between Walsh’s departure and Zahidi’s arrival, IATA Chief Financial Officer Sandrine Le Borgne will serve as acting director general to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
The appointment marks a significant milestone not only for IATA but also for Pakistan, as Zahidi becomes one of the most prominent Pakistan-born professionals to lead a major international organization. Her selection reflects growing recognition of her expertise in economics, public policy, leadership, and global development.
Before joining IATA, Zahidi served as Managing Director at the World Economic Forum (WEF), where she played a central role in shaping discussions on global economic growth, labor markets, education, sustainability, and the future of work. During her tenure at the WEF, she worked closely with governments, multinational corporations, policymakers, and international organizations to address some of the world’s most pressing economic and social challenges.
Her appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move by IATA as the aviation industry enters a new phase of transformation driven by sustainability goals, technological innovation, changing travel patterns, and geopolitical uncertainty.
Saadia Zahidi brings an impressive academic background to the role. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College in the United States before completing an MPhil in International Economics at The Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland. She later obtained a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, further strengthening her credentials in economics, governance, and public policy.
Beyond her work in international institutions, Zahidi is also an accomplished author. She wrote Fifty Million Rising, a widely recognized book exploring the growing participation of women in the workforce across Muslim-majority countries. The publication highlights the economic and social transformation taking place in many parts of the Muslim world and has been praised for bringing attention to women’s expanding role in economic development.
IATA said Zahidi’s extensive leadership experience at the World Economic Forum, combined with her expertise in economics and global policymaking, would help strengthen the association and guide the aviation industry through a period of rapid change.
In her acceptance statement, Zahidi expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said she looks forward to working closely with airlines, governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders around the world.
She emphasized that collaboration would remain essential as the aviation sector continues to recover from recent global disruptions while preparing for future challenges. Zahidi also highlighted the importance of innovation, resilience, and sustainability in ensuring the long-term growth of international air transport.
The global aviation industry is currently navigating multiple challenges, including rising fuel prices, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, labor shortages, and growing environmental expectations.
One of IATA’s biggest priorities remains achieving the airline industry’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Meeting that target will require significant investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), cleaner aircraft technologies, operational efficiency, and international cooperation between governments and airlines.
Zahidi has consistently advocated for balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility throughout her career. She has previously stressed that sustainability must remain a central priority even as countries face broader economic pressures and shifting global trade dynamics.
