Indian cinema took center stage at San Diego Comic-Con as Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor and Kannada superstar Yash unveiled their ambitious film Ramayana, a two-part adaptation of one of Hinduism’s most revered epics. The appearance marked a milestone for the project, reflecting the filmmakers’ vision of presenting one of India’s oldest and most cherished stories to audiences across the globe.
Ranbir Kapoor, who portrays Prince Rama in the film, described the experience of attending Comic-Con as a proud and memorable moment. Speaking during the promotional event, Kapoor said he had long admired comic conventions and never imagined he would one day attend as part of a project rooted so deeply in Indian culture.
He said bringing Ramayana to an international platform was not just exciting for the cast and crew but also an opportunity to introduce millions of people to an epic that has shaped Indian history, literature, and spirituality for thousands of years.
The film is based on the ancient Sanskrit epic Ramayana, widely regarded as one of the foundational texts of Hinduism. The story follows Prince Rama, believed by Hindus to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is forced into exile for 14 years alongside his devoted wife Sita and loyal brother Lakshmana. During their exile, Sita is abducted by Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka, setting the stage for one of mythology’s most celebrated battles between good and evil.
In the upcoming adaptation, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, while television actor Ravi Dubey portrays Lakshmana. Yash, best known internationally for the KGF franchise, takes on the role of Ravana, one of the most iconic and complex villains in Indian mythology.
Yash said Comic-Con was the perfect venue to introduce the film because the event attracts audiences who appreciate large-scale fantasy storytelling, world-building, and visually ambitious productions. He expressed confidence that Comic-Con attendees would understand the enormous effort involved in creating a project of this scale.
According to the filmmakers, Ramayana has an estimated production budget of approximately $500 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever produced in India. The massive investment reflects the producers’ commitment to delivering world-class visual effects, detailed production design, and cinematic storytelling capable of competing with major international franchises.
The film is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, known for directing blockbuster films such as Dangal and Chhichhore. Production is being handled by Prime Focus Studios, with the company planning an extensive international marketing campaign ahead of the film’s release.
The first installment of Ramayana is scheduled to hit cinemas across India on November 8 during the Diwali holiday season, traditionally one of the biggest periods for Bollywood releases. The second part is expected to arrive in 2027, completing the epic saga.
To build anticipation among global audiences, the cast and producers have launched promotional events in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con forms a key part of that strategy, highlighting the industry’s growing ambition to position Indian films alongside Hollywood’s biggest cinematic spectacles.
Ranbir Kapoor expressed optimism about the project’s future, saying he believes Ramayana carries a unique emotional and cultural significance that sets it apart from conventional commercial films. He noted that while every actor hopes for success, this project feels especially meaningful because of the legacy attached to the story and the responsibility of portraying such beloved characters.
San Diego Comic-Con has long served as one of the world’s premier entertainment conventions, bringing together filmmakers, comic creators, actors, gaming companies, and fans from across the globe. The event has increasingly become a launchpad for major Hollywood productions, making the presence of Ramayana another sign of India’s expanding influence in international entertainment.
Industry observers believe the film could mark a turning point for Indian cinema’s global ambitions if it successfully resonates with audiences beyond South Asia. With its massive budget, internationally recognized cast, and timeless storyline, Ramayana aims to bridge cultures while introducing one of India’s greatest epics to a worldwide audience.
