The ICC has officially announced that the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) Final will be played at The Oval in London instead of Lord’s. The title match is scheduled to take place from June 9 to June 13, 2027. The decision marks a change from expectations that Lord’s would host the final after staging the 2025 edition.
England has retained the hosting rights for the next three World Test Championship finals. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) selected The Oval as the venue for the 2027 final. The choice follows the successful organization of previous WTC finals in England, which have attracted large crowds and strong ticket sales.
According to the ICC, England continues to be the preferred host because of its ability to deliver major Test cricket events. The governing body believes the country provides excellent facilities and consistent fan support, regardless of which teams qualify for the final.
One factor behind the decision was concern over pitch quality at Lord’s. The famous cricket ground recently received its first ICC demerit point after the pitch used during England’s Test match against New Zealand was rated “unsatisfactory.” The rating raised questions about the venue’s readiness for another major international final.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which owns Lord’s, has accepted the concerns. The club has announced plans to review and relay several pitches that did not meet the required standard. Officials hope these improvements will allow Lord’s to host the World Test Championship Final again in 2029.
The 2027 final will continue England’s record of hosting every WTC final since the competition began. In the inaugural final in 2021, New Zealand defeated India at Southampton. Australia then beat India at The Oval in 2023. South Africa claimed its first ICC world title by defeating Australia at Lord’s in the 2025 final.
The current 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle is approaching its halfway stage. Australia currently leads the standings, followed by South Africa and New Zealand. England is in seventh place after winning four of its first 13 Test matches. Slow over-rate penalties have also reduced England’s chances of reaching the final.
ICC General Manager of Events and Operations Gaurav Saxena said the 2027 final will carry special importance because it will coincide with the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. He said the governing body looks forward to working closely with the ECB to organize another successful championship match.
