The Punjab Environment Department has announced a strict crackdown on smoke-emitting commercial and construction vehicles as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce air pollution and combat smog across the province.
The decision was announced after Director General Environment Punjab Musa Raza inspected vehicle checking operations and reviewed the province’s anti-smog campaign at Jinnah Terminal, Thokar Niaz Baig, and the Saggian entry points in Lahore.
During the visit, Musa Raza instructed officials to issue a final seven-day notice to owners and operators of commercial vehicles emitting excessive smoke. He said transporters must improve the roadworthiness and environmental fitness of their vehicles within the given deadline.
Officials warned that once the seven-day period expires, authorities will begin strict enforcement under a zero-tolerance policy, with no exceptions for violators.
The campaign will cover a wide range of commercial vehicles, including goods transport trucks, industrial staff transport vehicles, courier and delivery vans, bakery supply vehicles, and all other commercial vehicles entering Lahore on a daily basis.
The Environment Department has also directed officials to take action against tractor-trolleys and other vehicles transporting construction materials. Owners will receive seven-day notices and must fully comply with fugitive dust standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed to minimize dust pollution during transportation.
Authorities made it clear that construction vehicles will not be allowed to enter Lahore unless all building materials are properly covered. Any vehicle found violating the regulations will face immediate action, including confiscation of uncovered construction material, impounding of the vehicle for three days, and the imposition of substantial fines on those responsible.
Musa Raza emphasized that the Punjab government remains committed to tackling environmental pollution and improving air quality throughout the province. He said there would be no compromise on measures aimed at reducing smog, especially ahead of the upcoming smog season.
The Environment Department added that all relevant government agencies will continue working together to enforce environmental regulations, improve vehicle emissions standards, and ensure cleaner air for residents across Punjab.
