Pakistan is using an AI Weather System developed by China to improve weather monitoring during the ongoing monsoon season. The technology is expected to support better forecasting and strengthen disaster preparedness as heavy rains continue across different parts of the country.
The AI Weather System, known as MAZU-Urban, was developed by the China Meteorological Administration. It is an artificial intelligence-based early warning platform designed to help developing countries reduce the impact of climate-related disasters.
The system can monitor weather conditions in real time and generate emergency response plans for different disaster situations. It is designed to identify risks linked to floods, typhoons, agricultural losses, and other weather-related hazards.
One of the main features of the AI Weather System is its open-source design. This allows countries to modify and adapt the technology according to their local requirements. Officials say this flexibility helps improve forecasting based on regional weather patterns and disaster risks.
Pakistan has started using the platform as the country experiences another active monsoon season. Authorities believe advanced forecasting tools can help reduce the impact of floods, landslides, and other natural disasters.
Frukh Bashir, Head of Research and Development at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), said the technology could help improve forecasting products in Pakistan. He explained that better prediction tools would strengthen the country’s ability to monitor extreme weather events.
According to him, the system could improve forecasts for floods, droughts, and other climate-related emergencies. More accurate information would allow authorities to respond earlier and reduce risks for affected communities.
Chinese officials introduced the AI platform as part of their broader cooperation with developing countries in the field of artificial intelligence. They say the initiative aims to improve access to advanced technologies while supporting disaster risk reduction.
Zhang Kailin, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation and High-Tech Development at China’s National Development and Reform Commission, said China supports responsible and people-centered artificial intelligence development.
He said China promotes open-source access, stronger safety standards, and wider AI cooperation with countries across the Global South. The goal is to encourage innovation while ensuring technology is used safely and responsibly.
Chinese officials also highlighted the growing global use of their artificial intelligence models. According to them, China’s open-source AI technologies have been downloaded more than 10 billion times worldwide.
They also stated that researchers and developers continue to build new applications using Chinese large language models. More than 200 new derivative AI models are reportedly being developed every day.
Gan Xiaobin, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said China continues to provide affordable AI technologies and intelligent products to users around the world.
He added that international cooperation remains an important part of China’s AI strategy. The country supports the development of a diverse and open global AI ecosystem.
The report also mentioned Zimbabwe as another country benefiting from Chinese technology support. A supercomputing center built with Chinese assistance has become an important part of Zimbabwe’s artificial intelligence development.
