PMDC Approves 475 Additional MBBS Seats in Punjab Colleges

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved 475 additional MBBS seats for government medical colleges in Punjab. The decision will increase admission opportunities for students seeking medical education in the province.

With this approval, the total number of MBBS seats in Punjab’s government medical colleges has increased from 3,476 to 3,951. The overall number of seats in government medical and dental colleges has also risen to 4,241.

The approval comes after the Punjab Health Department requested the PMDC to finalize the long-pending proposal before the start of the new academic session. Officials wanted the additional seats to be available for admissions this year.

According to official information, the Health Department sent a letter to the PMDC in June asking the council to speed up the approval process. The department explained that the request had already been pending for several months.

The Punjab government had originally submitted a formal proposal on August 21, 2025. It requested an increase of 475 MBBS seats in public sector medical colleges to accommodate more students.

After receiving the proposal, the PMDC Council reviewed the request and approved the additional seats. Government medical colleges across Punjab will now admit students under the revised seat allocation from the upcoming academic session.

The increase in MBBS seats is expected to benefit thousands of students who compete every year for admission to public medical colleges. Admission to government institutions is highly competitive because of limited seats and high merit requirements.

Education officials believe the additional seats will allow more deserving candidates to pursue medical studies without changing the existing admission process. Students will still need to qualify based on merit and other eligibility requirements.

The expansion also supports efforts to strengthen medical education across the province. Increasing the number of medical graduates can help meet the growing demand for qualified doctors in the future.

Officials said expanding admissions is an important step toward improving healthcare services. More medical graduates could help address shortages of healthcare professionals in different regions.

The approval also resolves a long-standing issue that had delayed admission planning for the new academic year. Medical colleges can now begin preparations for admissions based on the updated number of available seats.

The decision reflects continued efforts to improve higher education opportunities in the medical sector. It also demonstrates cooperation between the Punjab Health Department and the PMDC to expand educational capacity.

The additional MBBS seats will become available from the upcoming academic session. This will give more aspiring doctors the opportunity to secure admission to government medical colleges and continue their medical education in Punjab.
