Gilgit-Baltistan Proposes Visa-Free Entry for Chinese Visitors

Officials in Gilgit-Baltistan have proposed allowing Chinese nationals to enter the region without visas. The proposal is part of a wider plan to strengthen tourism, improve regional connectivity, and support economic growth. Authorities believe easier travel arrangements could attract more visitors from China and benefit local businesses.

The proposal was presented during a high-level briefing attended by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain. Former Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Qamar Zaman Kaira also attended the meeting, where officials discussed the region’s major development priorities.

According to officials, the suggested visa-free arrangement would be similar to the existing travel system that allows residents of Gilgit-Baltistan to visit China’s Xinjiang region. They said adopting a similar policy for Chinese visitors could strengthen tourism and encourage greater economic cooperation between the neighboring regions.

Officials believe easier access for Chinese tourists would increase visitor numbers throughout the year. More tourists could benefit hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and small businesses. They also expect the proposal to create additional employment opportunities for people working in the tourism sector.

During the briefing, officials highlighted the need for better infrastructure to support future growth. One of the major proposals was the construction of an international airport in Gilgit. They said improved air connectivity would make travel easier for both domestic and international visitors while supporting tourism development.

The meeting also focused on several public service challenges facing the region. Officials called for immediate action to reduce prolonged electricity load-shedding. They said a reliable power supply is essential for residents, businesses, and tourism-related activities.

Another important issue raised during the discussion was the shortage of subsidized wheat. Officials urged the government to ensure a stable supply of essential food items. They said addressing this challenge would improve living conditions for communities across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Participants also stressed the importance of continued investment in roads, public facilities, and tourism infrastructure. Better transport and modern facilities would help attract more visitors and encourage private investment in the region.

Officials believe the proposed visa-free policy could strengthen cultural and economic ties between Pakistan and China. Increased tourism may also support local businesses by generating additional income and expanding commercial activity.

The proposal is currently under consideration, and no final decision has been announced. However, officials remain optimistic that the initiative, along with improvements in infrastructure and public services, will contribute to the long-term development of Gilgit-Baltistan and help unlock its tourism potential in the years ahead.
