PMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Islamabad and Rawalpindi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms in Islamabad and Rawalpindi over the next two days, warning that heavy downpours on Tuesday and Wednesday could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas. The weather advisory urges residents and local authorities to remain alert as the incoming system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms across the twin cities.

According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously affecting the upper parts of the country. At the same time, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to enter northeastern Pakistan from Tuesday evening. A westerly weather system is also set to influence the upper regions, increasing rainfall activity and raising the likelihood of heavy showers in several areas.

Apart from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, rain accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms is expected in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Okara, Kasur, and surrounding districts. The widespread rainfall is expected to provide relief from the ongoing hot and humid weather conditions affecting much of the region.

The PMD has warned that strong winds and lightning may damage vulnerable structures, including solar panels, electricity poles, billboards, and other temporary installations. Authorities have been advised to ensure emergency response teams remain on alert and that drainage systems are ready to handle heavy rainfall to reduce the risk of urban flooding.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas. Motorists should exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid driving through waterlogged streets. The department also urged the public to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.

The PMD said the current spell of hot and humid weather is expected to ease as the rain-bearing system moves across the region. While the rainfall will bring much-needed relief from high temperatures, officials have stressed the importance of remaining vigilant until the weather system passes and conditions improve.
