Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway Divided Into Five Sections Before Construction

The long-awaited Motorway project linking Sukkur and Hyderabad has been divided into five sections before construction begins. The government expects work to start during the current fiscal year after years of delays.

The latest update was shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications. The meeting was chaired by Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani. Officials briefed committee members on the project’s progress, funding arrangements, and construction plan.

According to the briefing, the Motorway will be built in five separate segments. These include Hyderabad to Tando Adam, Tando Adam to Nawabshah, Nawabshah to Naushahro Feroze, Naushahro Feroze to Ranipur, and Ranipur to Sukkur.

Officials said the project has remained delayed for more than five years. Despite the setback, the government plans to begin construction during the current financial year. Authorities believe dividing the project into smaller sections will help improve implementation and funding management.

The committee was informed that Rs. 30 billion has been allocated for the project in the current fiscal year’s budget. However, the total financial requirement stands at Rs. 70 billion. Additional funding will be needed to complete the planned work on schedule.

The government has adopted different financing methods for each section of the project. The Hyderabad to Tando Adam and Tando Adam to Nawabshah segments will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach is expected to attract private investment while reducing the burden on public finances.

Meanwhile, the Naushahro Feroze to Ranipur and Ranipur to Sukkur sections will receive financial support from the Islamic Development Bank. The Nawabshah to Naushahro Feroze section will be financed through the OPEC Fund.

Officials also presented the expected construction schedule for every segment. They informed the committee that work on each section will move forward according to the availability of funds and completion of required procedures.

The committee also reviewed the status of projects under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP). Officials said the total PSDP allocation stands at Rs. 3.7 trillion. Out of this amount, nearly Rs. 2.6 trillion has already been committed to throw-forward projects that are still under construction.

The Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway is considered one of Pakistan’s key road infrastructure projects. Once completed, it is expected to improve connectivity between northern and southern Sindh. The route will also reduce travel time and support trade and transportation across the region.

The project has faced repeated delays over the past several years because of financial and administrative challenges. Officials now hope the revised implementation strategy and multiple funding sources will help speed up construction.
