WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new setup interface for Android users, offering more flexibility when configuring the messaging app on compatible devices. The feature is currently being tested with a limited group of beta users and is expected to be available initially for Android tablets.
According to reports, the new setup screen is designed to give users greater control over how they use WhatsApp on a tablet. Instead of automatically linking the device to an existing account, users will be presented with two setup options when launching the app for the first time.
The new interface includes a “Choose an option” screen. The first option allows users to link the tablet as a companion device to an existing WhatsApp account. The second option, called “Transfer your account,” enables users to make the tablet their primary WhatsApp device.
If users choose to transfer their account, WhatsApp will prompt them to enter their country code and registered phone number. After submitting the information, a six-digit verification code will be sent to confirm their identity. Once the code is entered successfully, the tablet becomes the primary device for the WhatsApp account.
Users will also be able to restore their previous chats by downloading their conversation history from Google Drive, making the transition to the new device smoother without losing important messages.
The update is expected to improve the experience for people who prefer using WhatsApp on larger screens. Once the tablet is configured as the primary device, users will have access to the same features available on smartphones. There will be no limitations compared to the phone version, allowing users to send messages, make calls, and manage their accounts without restrictions.
Another advantage is that the usual 14-day inactivity logout rule for companion devices will not apply when the tablet is set up as the primary device.
The feature is currently limited to selected beta testers, and WhatsApp has not yet announced an official release date. However, it is expected to roll out to more Android users after the testing phase is completed successfully.
