Senate Panel Accuses FBR of Hiding Tax Shortfall

Lawmakers on the Senate Standing Committee on Interior have accused officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) of concealing information to hide the authority’s failure to achieve its tax collection target.

During the committee meeting, Convener Saifullah Abro strongly criticized FBR officials, alleging that they had provided misleading information to Parliament regarding the tax authority’s performance.

The meeting took a dramatic turn when Senator Abro directed the FBR’s Chief Operations Officer to leave the session following the exchange.

He also criticized the performance of senior FBR officials, claiming that three to four officers had damaged the institution’s functioning and questioning why officials accused of providing incorrect information continued to hold key positions.

The remarks came amid increasing parliamentary scrutiny of the FBR’s tax collection performance and its reporting to oversight committees.

The FBR has not yet issued an official response to the allegations raised during the committee meeting.
